For the Dundee Hurricanes, 2013 was a year to forget.
The city’s American football team suffered a humiliating season, losing all 10 games they played including a 78-2 defeat to their long-standing rivals The Edinburgh Wolves.
Their attempts to turn things round last year have now been captured in a documentary by Fife film-maker Alex Harron called Bend, Don’t Break.
It charts the ups-and-downs of the team under new coach Ross McPherson.
Players include Kris Gibson, who has suffered eight concussions playing for the Hurricanes, and Michael Dotts, an American who only learned the game after moving to Scotland.
“The main reason for choosing the Hurricanes was the Team hadn’t won a game in 22 months and lost all the games in the 2013 season,” said Alex.
“They also nearly disbanded but decided to give it one last try.
“To me, the team only had one way to go and that was up, I saw it as Rocky with American football.”
Alex hopes for the film to receive its premiere at the DCA this spring and its online trailer has been watched by viewers in the United States and even as far afield as China.
He said: ”I was a fan of the game before but making the film has made me fall in love with the game even more.”
Alex added that he also been in talks about a television broadcast for the 75-minute movie.
A graduate of Abertay University, Alex has made a number of short documentaries. However, this is his first feature-length film.
