Police in Dundee are investigating a bogus workmen-type incident in the Clepington Road area.
A man has been approaching elderly residents claiming to be from Dundee City Council health and safety regarding loose roof slates.
Police say he has been “pressuring” them to obtain a quote and work from a roofer he has on standby, and insisting this work needs to be carried out on the same date.
Councillor Ian Borthwick, who spent many years working for Age Concern, branded the incident “reprehensible”.
“Individuals who prey on older and vulnerable people in this way have to be exposed to the full rigour of the law,” he said.
“Unfortunately this does occur. As an Age Concern advocacy officer for some years I had to deal with the consequences of this.
“Incidents such as this often damages an individual’s confidence immeasurably.”
He said some older people who fall victim to this sort of scam do not disclose it to their relatives because they are ashamed they have been taken in.
“The important thing is that anyone with information of this or who sees anything suspicious takes measures to ensure the police are made aware,” Mr Borthwick added.
“If someone comes to the door don’t let them in.
“When in doubt keep them out and contact a neighbour or relative.
“There’s nothing more disgusting than this.
“This can cause significant damage to older or vulnerable people.
“The message to neighbours and friends is exercise a caring oversight.”
