The annual Merchant Navy Day Service on HMS Unicorn in Dundee featured a commemoration of the Battle of the Atlantic 70 years ago.
Organised by the Fraternity of Masters and Seamen in Dundee, the service of rousing hymns was accompanied by the Dundee Instrumental Band and conducted by the Reverend David Logan, who is both a military padre and a volunteer guide in Unicorn.
The Battle of the Atlantic lasted from the first to the last days of the Second World War, but it has always been recognised that from May 1943 the Allies established the upper hand in the battle against the German U-boats. It was the longest campaign of the war and victory was achieved at a huge cost with more than 2,000 British merchant ships and 30,000 men lost.
The battle was crucial to Britain winning the war as military and civilian supplies were shipped from North America. Failure would have meant the slow starvation of industry and the people.
