Dundonians urged to beware of council tax text message scam
ByThe Courier Reporter
Dundee consumers are being warned not to be taken in by the latest scam bidding to trick them into providing sensitive bank details.
The council has received reports about a text message claiming to be from “GovUK” which informs the recipient they are due a council tax refund.
They are then told to log on towww.online-council-tax.co.ukto claim the money. This has been identified as a phishing website that aims to gain access to bank and credit card accounts.
Environment convener Craig Melville said the council would never contact residents in that manner, adding: “If anyone receives this text message please delete it immediately.”
The website has subsequently been shut down.
