Chance to sleep on it at Dundee ‘bedroom tax’ protest
ByThe Courier Reporter
Campaigners in Dundee are taking part in a UK-wide sleepout this weekend to register their opposition to the so-called bedroom tax.
People in more than 60 towns and cities across England, Wales and Scotland will take part in a mass sleepout against the payments on Saturday night.
In Dundee campaigners will be setting up camp in front of the SteepleChurch, Nethergate, from 7pm on Saturday until Sunday morning.
The event is intended to highlight the impact the cut in benefits will have on the poorest families in the city and across the United Kingdom.
North Lanarkshire Council is already moving towards carrying out evictions over the matter.
The campaigners are demanding an end to the “bedroom tax”, no evictions and for the Scottish Government to amend the legislation to end the use of evictions for “bedroom tax” arrears.
They also want the Government and local authorities to use their borrowing powers, underspend and reserves to write off the “bedroom tax”.
