Hull beats Dundee to UK City of Culture 2017 title
ByGraeme Ogston
Dundee’s dream of becoming UK City of Culture 2017 is over.
There were tears and groans of disappointment from the Dundee bid team gathered in the city centre’s Caffe Borsa as Hull was announced as the competition winner by Culture Secretary Maria Miller at 7.45am.
Dundee had also faced Leicester and Swansea Bay in the competition.
The city had hoped its proposed £25 million year-long programme of events, including a festival of football and light installation spanning the Tay Bridge would bring the title to the city in just over three years’ time..embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; padding-top: 30px; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; height: auto; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }
But their hopes were dashed as their English rival emerged victorious.
The result ended a nervous five-day wait after the four bid teams made their final presentations in Derry-Londonderry last week.
