The first image showing how a planned £5 million Sports Direct gym and retail outlet in Dundee will look has been unveiled.
Sportswear tycoon Mike Ashley’s company has lodged plans to build the development at the Stack Leisure Park in Lochee.
If given the green light, the outlet will become the first in Scotland and is expected to bring 96 jobs to the city.
The proposed site was last in use as the Venue nightclub, but has lain empty for more than 10 years.
Site owner TJ Morris has now released an image that gives a glimpse of what the new development will look like.
It’s based on the company’s only other retail and gym outlet at Aintree, in Liverpool, which is due to open later this year.
The unit will be converted into 30,000 sq ft of retail space on the ground floor and a 30,000 sq ft gym on a mezzanine level.
The Stack Leisure Park was bought by TJ Morris three years ago and the firm helped to attract retailers including The Range and Aldi to the area.
A planning application submitted to the city council on behalf of Sports Direct described how Dundee was “the first choice” to locate the development.
The firm, considered to be the UK’s leading sports retailer, already operates a store in the Overgate Centre.
A spokesman for TJ Morris said: “We are delighted to unveil Sports Direct’s plans for their first purpose-built retail and gym concept in Scotland at The Stack, Dundee.
“This will be in addition to their existing store at the Overgate Centre in the city which trades very well.
“We understand this significant investment in a retail/gym concept will create in the region of 96 jobs for the Lochee area.
“We are delighted to welcome another new tenant to the Stack and are pleased that our continuing investment in the area has lead to this exciting new format from Sports Direct locating in Lochee.”
