Residents near a busy Dundee junction are calling for a pedestrian crossing at a road where they “risk their lives”.
They claim that constant shop deliveries, as well as speeding drivers, are causing havoc at the junction of Blackness Road and Ashbank Road.
The elderly residents said they often have to stand for up to 10 minutes before there is any gap in the traffic.
Irene Adam, 85, a retired stock controller, said: “That is definitely a bad crossing. You take your life into your hands every time you go across that road.
“A pedestrian crossing would solve the problem, as then cars would be forced to stop.
“At the moment they are not, and they whizz past you.”
Gladys Howard, 89, a retired typist, said it was frightening for elderly people to have to hurry across a road.
She added: “People are always in a rush to get somewhere and so very few cars stop to let us across. My neighbour and I always go up the road together and she’s in her nineties.
“We have to wait until it’s completely clear, otherwise we end up caught up in the middle of the traffic and it can be scary.”
Bill Gorrie, 82, said: “I normally go out early in the morning when the traffic isn’t too bad, but if you go later you could be waiting for five or 10 minutes to get across.
“However, I don’t imagine drivers would be happy with a crossing.”
Councillor Richard McCready said: “I am concerned that the city council appears to have dismissed residents’ concerns about crossing Blackness Road at this point.
“This is a very busy area with a lot of traffic and also a number of sheltered housing facilities in the vicinity.
“I think Dundee City Council should engage with the local community and revisit the issue of a pedestrian crossing here.
“I will be speaking to officers in city development.”
