Jubilant advocates of bringing Sistema to Dundee are now getting down to the serious business of making the project a reality.
The planning comes after councillors, singing from the same hymn sheet, unanimously agreed to open talks to bring the music project to Dundee.
Sistema Scotland, inspired by the El Sistema youth music programme in Venezuela, aims to lift children out of poverty and deprivation through intensive orchestral music tuition.
It has already enjoyed huge success in Stirling and has also been adopted in Glasgow and Aberdeen.
Now, both Sistema and Michael Marra, a keen campaigner to bring the project to the city, are getting down to making it a reality.
And the pair agree that the priority must be to organise a meeting with Sistema as soon as possible, as well as maintaining the massive momentum that has gathered behind the project.
Mr Marra said: “I am truly delighted with the result it has been a long time coming. The discussions we have had with the council have always been delicate but they have taken a very responsible attitude.
“The fact that the vote was unanimous has been extremely valuable. The next step is to build on that support and show a united front around it. That is partly about the attitude people show.
“But the physical next step is to invite Sistema to meet, which we want to see happen as soon as possible.”
George Anderson, from Sistema, agrees.
He said: “This is fantastic news. We are excited to start discussions with the council. It is great that they are turning up the heat on their interest, as we require a commitment from local authorities.
“We have a small but highly skilled team. We normally put in a team in a city and just let them get things up and running. That is what we are doing in Aberdeen this year and are expecting to start classes by the spring.
“And we have an ambition to set up a new centre every year or two years and, as I said, we are doing that in Aberdeen next year.”
