A mother has slammed dangerous parking by fellow parents who choose to stop illegally at the gates of a Dundee primary school rather than walk a few extra metres.
Frustrated Clepington Primary School parent Nichola Fraser says she sees people park over double yellow lines, pavements and “keep clear” areas.
She took photographs of some of the offenders “out of disgust” after one parent swerved in front of her to park on double yellow lines in front of the school.
She said: “It’s not about their convenience or being late picking up their child. It’s about all children’s safety and decent courtesy to other drivers.
“It is something that really frustrates but also really worries me. I have been witness to a number of near misses of children being hit.”
Nichola has two boys, aged seven and nine, at the school and said it is “unbelievable” that drivers continue to endanger children despite warnings and numerous spaces just feet away in the car park.
She said: “Just park in the car park, walk your children to the front gate and then go back. It’s so simple. It’s just laziness.
“The head teacher has been very helpful in trying to raise the awareness of parents about the possible risks and the council has had traffic wardens patrol at these times.
“Unfortunately they cannot be there every day though. Ultimately it is down to parents having a choice whether to park safely or not.
“They are adults who can park responsibly without needing a traffic warden there to ask them to move on or their presence to dissuade them in the first place.”
Nichola has been in contact with the city council and local police, both of which have offered support and agreed to give the issue attention.
A spokesman for Dundee City Council said: “The safety of children is of paramount importance to the city council.
“We have worked hard over a considerable period of time with parents, drivers and the whole school community to try to encourage people to park safely for the sake of their own and other people’s children.”
