Charges at the Tealing Traveller site could be reviewed as part of a bid to end the scourge of illicit encampments in Dundee.
Councillor Fraser Macpherson said there needs to be a “discussion” about why the site is not being used.
He said “a debate” about Travellers is needed in Dundee and beyond after a month where numerous camps were set up in the city.
Illicit encampments at Dundee’s Camperdown and Caird parks caused particular consternation among residents.
Dundee Technology Park, in Mr Macpherson’s West End ward, has also been a common area for groups of caravans to gather.
Mr Macpherson told The Courier: “I’ve been in constant touch with the head of democratic and legal services, Roger Mennie, about this issue, as well as property services.
“At the moment, we have this constant move from site to site to site. It is not an acceptable situation. There is clearly a need for a discussion on the facilities available for Travellers in Dundee, not just among politicians but others too.
“There must be a way resolve this particular issue. The council currently charges for the use of its own site and there needs to be a debate about how to encourage the Travelling community to make better use of it.”
Mr Macpherson stressed that, given the public pay for the upkeep of the Tealing site, it was right Travellers were charged to stay there.
However, he added that the situation across the whole of Scotland needs to be assessed.
“If every local authority did as Dundee has done, it wouldn’t be such a problem,” the Lib Dem member said.
“There is a need for the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities to look at the number of sites across the whole of Scotland.
“We can’t go on in the way we have been. I’ve had numerous complaints from constituents and it is a highly unsatisfactory situation.”
