An online campaign has been mounted in a bid to save jobs at Dundee University.
A petition asking Dundee University’s principal to reconsider planned cuts has been set up.
The “Stop the Unnecessary Job Cuts at Dundee University” campaign has been written as a letter to Professor Pete Downes.
It said: “We are asking you to rethink your ‘transformation vision’ for the future of the university so that it genuinely values all staff and students.
“Please consider the damage that will be done to the university’s reputation, research standing, student experience and recruitment if you continue to ignore the concerns of the majority of staff and students and insist on cutting academic staff jobs.”
The university court made the decision last week that between 80 and 120 posts are expected to be lost. It is hoped the majority, if not all, of the job losses will come about through a voluntary severance scheme.
There are currently more than 1,300 academics on the payroll. One woman who signed the petition wrote: “Universities are academic communities, not businesses for profit.
“Students are not customers to be exploited for cash, and academic freedom must be protected if our world-leading university system is to thrive in the future.”
