The charm of its swimming baths has long kept the Lochee Leisure Centre popular with the public.
Increasingly, however, those charms have waned in the face of the modern facilities increasingly demanded by families.
Now, it has been announced that the centre will receive a £1 million upgrade thanks to funding from Dundee City Council, which has been working to reverse the decline of the wider Lochee area.
The centre, which is managed by Leisure and Culture Dundee, will be closed from Monday May 25 as its modernisation takes place.
When the doors to the new and improved centre reopen six months later on Saturday December 12 it should be unrecognisable.
The £941,000 council investment will enable the creation of a ‘changing village’ that will increase changing facilities for disabled people and provide a more family-friendly environment.
The sauna area will also be upgraded, while a number of other behind-the-scenes improvements will come together to ensure a more pleasant visitor experience.
They should also ensure that the centre can offer a significantly expanded programme of lessons and activities for all ages.
Lochee councillor and Dundee Lord Provost Bob Duncan said the investment is excellent news for the area and Dundee as a whole.
“There has already been a lot of work done at the leisure centre but some parts have not been revamped for a long time,” he said.
“The modern requirements of a leisure centre such as this are that it provides good family facilities and this work will ensure it does that.
“It will be a good thing for the people of Lochee and of Dundee.”
While work is ongoing, the Olympia, St Paul’s and Grove will be available for members and customers who still wish access to swimming facilities in Dundee, while the Douglas Sports Centre will offer an alternative sauna facility. Leisure and Culture Dundee apologised for any inconvenience caused.
