A piece of Dundee’s commercial history has sold for hundreds of pounds at an auction in London.
A 20th-century stained, leaded and glass panel featuring the Dundee city crest was among six shop window panels sold together in one lot at Bonhams in London for £750.
The panels were removed from stores owned by Dunn & Co, which went out of business in 1996.
The Dundee panel was sold with panels from Dunn & Co stores in Edinburgh, Paisley, Coventry, Liverpool and Hull.
Charlie Thomas, a Bonhams expert, told The Courier: “In the days when retailing was less global and brand driven, shops were keen to stress their local connections, even if they were part of a larger, national branch network.
“These windows showing town and city crests are perfect and very decorative examples of that trend.”
Dunn & Co was founded in 1886 by George Arthur Dunn, who started his working life by selling hats on the streets of Birmingham.
It went on to become a stalwart of the British High Street, but as innovative rival retailers opened, Dunn & Co struggled to adapt and in the early 1990s the group sold 40 of its stores.
In its final year of trading, Dunn & Co had 130 shops and 429 employees.
