A drug dealer who supplied cannabis from his bedroom at his mum’s Dundee house has narrowly escaped a prison sentence.
David Moran, 25, ran his illicit drug business from his mother’s home in Finella Gardens for around five months.
Dundee Sheriff Court heard police raided the property after receiving information about his involvement in the supply of the class B drug in August last year.
Officers recovered drugs and telephones detailing his illegal trade, together with a significant amount of cash though he claimed he was looking after his sister’s savings.
Depute fiscal Sue Ruta told the court: “The accused’s mother and sister were traced upstairs and the accused was within his bedroom.
“Police noticed a strong smell of cannabis and he said it was nothing to do with his mum. They asked what he was talking about and he replied ‘the drugs’.
“He went on to say ‘I know why you are here, it’s to search my room’.”
Police recovered a box containing 11 grams of herbal cannabis from his bedroom, with a value of £110, and two sets of scales from the kitchen.
They also found £810 cash in his bedroom, plastic bags, an iPhone and a BlackBerry mobile phone.
The iPhone was found to have more than 100 text messages indicative of the sale of cannabis over a five-month period, while the BlackBerry had more than 1,000 text messages of the same nature.
Solicitor Theo Finlay, defending, said: “His involvement with this was to supply cannabis to friends so these are people he would be communicating with anyway.
“He has now stopped smoking cannabis completely and is quite fearful of getting involved in anything like this again he has very limited previous convictions.”
Moran admitted that between April 17 and August 19 last year, at his home address, he was concerned in the supply of cannabis.
Sheriff Elizabeth Munro said: “You have been very stupid to get caught up in this.”
She ordered him to complete 100 hours of unpaid work and seized £405 in cash.
