Mr Proctor began his 50-year career at DC Thomson in May 1940. Aged 16 he took a junior position which had a ‘prospect for journalism’ with the company. Later that year he transferred to be a sub-editor at the Evening Telegraph. He was called up to war service in 1942 and served in the navy and then as an observer in the Fleet Air Arm. He and his wife Janet had two children, Neil, 58, and Isobel, who died in 2006 aged 53. Mr Proctor was born and raised in Dundee.
