Abertay students voice concerns over independence referendum outcome

Two “stirring” debates on the independence referendum in September have been held at Abertay University in Dundee.

Dundee-based MSP Jenny Marra and The Courier’s political editor Kieran Andrews were first up to discuss the ramifications of either a Yes or a No vote on Monday.

Both faced some stiff questioning from a lively student audience in the Hanna McClure Centre at the Abertay Student Association on Bell Street.

Among the main topics students were concerned with were uncertainty over tuition fees, also how Scotland would be affected by the pound in the event of a Yes vote.

Students were also interested in how Scotland’s devolved powers could be increased if the vote went the other way. The students were concerned over various educational interests, whichever way the vote goes.

Later an education debate on the future of higher and further education post independence referendum was held in the main lecture theatre of the Kidd Building at Abertay.

Guests were Dundee East MSP Shona Robison, Robert Foster of the National Union of Students and Deborah Shepherd of the University and College Union.

Abertay Students Association president Richard Cook said: “We are doing a series of these events to ensure students are well informed about the independence debate.

“This is the most important decision for Scotland in the past 300 years and it’s absolutely vital they know as much as possible about it.”
