A pregnant teenager is back behind bars after being told she had done “nothing to help herself” in an assault case.
Cathrine Whyte was blasted by Sheriff McFarlane on Wednesday, who told the 17-year-old he had never seen agencies “bend over backwards” as much to help someone in his 40 years in criminal justice.
Whyte, of Deveron Crescent, was ordered to co-operate with social workers preparing a report in her case, which the sheriff said could be a lifeline for her.
She was given a mobile phone to keep in touch but claimed not to have numbers for support workers and people even went to collect her at home only to find she wasn’t there.
Solicitor Anika Jethwa said Whyte was struggling to cope with her pregnancy and other life matters.
She said at the time of the original offence she was only 16 and was drinking and using drugs but had stopped when she met her partner, who is the father of her unborn child.
Whyte was remanded in custody until her next court appearance on March 14.
