Dundee’s Lord Provost has said he “would have happily” sent a representative from the council to commemorations in France for the Battle of Loos.
But Lord Provost Bob Duncan said the local authority has not received an invitation to any overseas ceremony.
An estimated 7,000 Scots died in the battle, which started on September 25 1915, with about half of them thought to have been from the Dundee area.
It was said that hardly a household in the city was unaffected by the loss of the men in The Black Watch’s 4th Battalion.
The granddaughter of one Dundee victim said she was disappointed no one was going to represent the city in an official capacity in France.
Christophe Lenglain, who is on the organising committee for the event in France, said he received little interest from any groups in the UK to attend and confirmed no invitations had been sent to Dundee council.
He added: “We do have a Scottish Government representative attending the air show this weekend. We will also have Scottish flags and bagpipes celebrating Scotland’s role.
“The event on the 26th is being arranged by the council in Loos. I would welcome contact from any member of Dundee City Council and would be happy to help to arrange for them to attend the event.”
The main ceremonies, involving the Royal Irish Rifles, will take place in the town of Loos-en-Gohelle, near Lens, on Saturday September 26.
Mr Duncan confirmed no one was making the journey, but said he would have been happy to send someone if they had known about it or been sent an invitation.
The council will host its own commemorations on September 26 and 27.
Mr Duncan added: “I’ve not had an invitation. Even if I had been invited, I wouldn’t have been able to go because I need to be here on the day of the Battle of Loos as I have to lay down poppies in Perth at The Black Watch’s Balhousie Castle.
“If we had received an invitation we would have been quite happy to send someone. The event in Dundee is the national event and will be equal to events around the world.”
The granddaughter of a Dundee victim said: “As it approaches the 100th anniversary of the start of the battle, I am saddened to learn that neither Dundee City Council, nor The Black Watch at Perth, are to send representation to Loos.”
