Man stole packets of meat from Dundee Co-op when benefits stopped
ByThe Courier Reporter
A Dundee man who is waiting to go on a rehabilitation scheme stole packets of meat after his benefits stopped.
During his court appearance on Friday, Thomas Stewart, 33, of Dee Gardens, admitted that on January 23 at Co-op, Albert Street, he stole a quantity of meat while on bail.
Stewart’s agent George Donnelly said he was waiting to go to rehabilitation scheme Teen Challenge.
He said: “He must give up his house and Jobseeker’s Allowance because it is a year-long rehabilitation.”
Stewart had been advised to apply for a different type of benefit.
However, Mr Donnelly said: “When one benefit is terminated it is not immediately replaced by another.
“He is in this hiatus. These packets of meat were taken to live off.”
He said his client had already exhausted the amount of visits he could make to the foodbank on Constitution Street and would now hope for further engagement with other agencies.
Sheriff Way deferred sentence to February 28 when Stewart has other matters calling.
