Two men have been arrested after smoke bombs were set off at Dundee United’s New Year derby with Aberdeen.
Smoke bombs were let off in the away fans’ stands at Tannadice.
Almost 4,000 Dons fans attended the sold-out match.
The Dons could also face a reprimand after United striker Ryan Gauld appeared to be struck by a drink thrown from the same stand.
The match commander, Chief Superintendent Craig Suttie, said: “While both sets of supporters attended the match in good seasonal spirit and were well behaved, it was disappointing that there were seven smoke pellets let off in the West Stand at Tannadice.
“Another pellet was allegedly set off at a licensed premises.
“We arrested one person for the incident in the stadium and another for the incident elsewhere in Dundee. Both arrests were in relation to possession of this type of item.
“It’s disappointing to see this trend of bringing items of this type to major events such as football matches.
“People should be in no doubt that we will not tolerate their use.
“I deplore their use because they not only impact on people’s enjoyment they also present the very real potential to impact negatively on the safety of people.”
The Dons won the match 2-1.
