A former jute baron’s mansion is to be transformed into a “high-end” bar and restaurant, if planning permission is granted.
Developers have said Caird Rest, located on Perth Road close to Dundee University, will boast a luxury interior split over two levels, with a cocktail bar and Mediterranean-style menu.
The new plans for the B-listed building, which were submitted to the council this month, also show that the new outlet would retain and restore much of the original 19th Century look of the property.
Developer Cosmo Molinaro said he hoped to name the new nightspot Lusso Bar and Grill and said it would provide a “spacious, luxury experience” similar to what people would expect in high-end areas of Edinburgh or Glasgow.
Asked about investing in the city, he said: “With everything that is going on around the waterfront now, there has been a real boost to coming and investing in Dundee. I think that there is not a lot of this kind of thing in the city yet, but I’m certain more will be on its way.”
Planners had already approved the premises being converted into a boutique hotel, which would have housed 13 rooms.
Mr Molinaro said these plans were abandoned after it was felt the building was too small to give it the upmarket feel he desired.
However, he is hopeful that planners will like the new idea and says that it will be beneficial for the area.
