A gay former football referee is taking legal action against a women’s football team over the theft of his property while he was in charge of one of their games in Dundee.
Joe Richardson believes Tayside Ladies were at fault when his mobile phone was stolen from the changing rooms at Glenesk Park.
The 29-year-old hanged up his whistle over what he believes to be a lack of support from the football authorities over the theft and homophobic abuse he suffered in a separate match.
He was expelled after venting his frustration on Facebook about his “six months of hell”.
His Samsung Galaxy Note II was stolen from the premises on Balfield Road on September 1 while he was in charge of Tayside Ladies’ game against Jeanfield Swifts LFC.
Police were called but no one has been charged for the theft.
Mr Richardson said attempts to discuss the matter with the club, Scottish Football Association, the Scottish Women’s Football Association and the local referees’ association have proved fruitless.
Tayside Ladies coach Kevin Higgins took issue with Mr Richardson’s version of events and said the club would contest any legal action.
“Tayside Ladies also had items taken and the matter was immediately reported to the police,” he said.
“We have told Mr Richardson it was his responsibility to have used the dressing room key for the referee’s changing room.
“It was his own responsibility to ensure he left the changing room securely locked. He did not do this so any insurance claim would be deemed invalid.”
Mr Richardson responded: “No key was given to me on arrival at Glenesk Park.
“I have also not received a response to my letter seeking recompense for the phone to avoid a lengthy legal battle.
“I have instructed my lawyer to start recovery proceedings against Tayside Ladies FC.”
Police are continuing to investigate the incident. Thieves made off with the phone, a two-figure sum in pounds and 40 euros between 2pm and 4pm.
A woman was seen in the area at the time. She is described as 5ft 6in, with shoulder length brown hair tied back and wearing a grey hooded top and grey jogging bottoms.
Anyone with information should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
