The mother of an autistic man has claimed her son was forced to live in “uninhabitable” conditions after carers failed to check up on him.
Distraught Marina Grant, 44, has accused Hillcrest Housing and care group Carr Gomm of failing her son, Stevie, 28, after discovering that his home on Rosefield Street, Dundee, had flooded five times over the past month.
Ms Grant insists that she only learned of Stevie’s predicament after speaking with him on the phone.
Now, after “being passed from pillar to post”, Ms Grant revealed she has made a complaint to the Care Inspectorate.
Conceding that she has been left in tears by the revelations, she said: “I am at my wits’ end.
“Stevie is 28, but suffers from Asperger’s syndrome and is a very vulnerable human being.
“I learned from speaking with him on the phone that he had been sleeping on the sofa for six weeks.
“When I asked him why he told me it was because the house had flooded again and that there was water dripping through his light switches. This is the first time I had been aware of this because no one had told us.
“When I asked his carer who provides one-to-one-care for him why it hadn’t been reported, she said she had no idea because she has never been into his flat.
“Hillcrest now say they’ve found a temporary flat for Stevie, but that they want him to move back into his old flat once work is done.”
Ms Grant added that she was disgusted by the standard of housing given to the city’s vulnerable adults.
She said: “The walls in Stevie’s bathroom have previously been black with mould and the smell is unbearable.
“I’ve even seen wires hanging over puddles of water.
“He’s been in the flat for five years and there’s always been issues.
“Stevie pays £500 a month for his flat and I wouldn’t want an animal to live in it.
“This is what our vulnerable young adults are paying for.
“They’re being let down so badly.”
Despite the claims, a spokeswoman for Carr Gomm insisted she was unaware of any ongoing complaints involving the Care Inspectorate.
She said: “Carr Gomm is proud of the care and support services we provide to individuals and communities across Scotland.”
A spokesperson for Hillcrest Housing said: “Following the relocation of the tenant into temporary accommodation at the end of last week work is now under way to replace the water damaged ceiling in the property’s bathroom.”
