The new managing director of National Express Dundee has promised a review into routes and more carbon-friendly buses.
Elsie Turbyne comes to the job with a pledge to improve customer service, roll out of smart cards for bus travel and improve routes to Ninewells, the universities and the waterfront.
Ticket prices on National Express buses are fixed for the year, but the company will look into promotions to economise the service for users.
She said: “We are looking at the route structure to make it easier for the people of Dundee.
“More unified, easier to understand routes, some of our routes are quite complicated for the customer. A big review is going on at the moment.”
A new livery for the buses will be chosen by local people following a consultation in the spring.
One of the possible colour schemes being considered is British racing green.
Individual routes could be branded to help passengers navigate services.
After the Seagate, Whitehall Street and Lochee Road were named among the 10 most polluted streets in Scotland, the new National Express boss promised to further reduce the company’s carbon footprint.
She said: “We currently run nine low-carbon vehicles, and all our vehicles are Euro-compliant.
“We are looking at new vehicles that might be even more carbon-friendly. It is something that we do take very seriously
“Through various means we will ensure there is less carbon emitted by buses at the end of this year than there was at the same time last year.”
A new vision on the way the company operates in Dundee and Tayside will be led by Ms Turbyne.
She said: “I’m a local person, I’ve worked with this company for a long time and we want to bring a bit more pride back to our service.
“We want to make it smarter, simpler and invest £2 million this year alone to ensure the people of Dundee get the bus service they deserve.”
Shona Robison MSP said: “I congratulate Elsie Turbyne on her appointment as managing director and look forward to working with her and Dundee City Council on plans to transform bus travel in Dundee.
“The planned investment by National Express has the potential to boost Dundee economically, provide better access to public services and promote health and wellbeing and I look forward to seeing their plans come to fruition.”
City council city development convener Will Dawson said: “We are happy to speak to National Express and explore partnership opportunities.
“We are keen that the city can benefit from improved public transport.”
