Last year saw a three-year high in the number of potholes repaired in Dundee, according to new figures.
In a report to the city’s development committee, councillors heard that 26,638 potholes were filled during the last year and that the council was named Best Performing Roads and Winter Maintenance Service in the UK.
A relatively mild winter and increased investment on roads has led to a 35% drop in the number of potholes in the city this year compared with the same time last year.
Roads are maintained jointly by Dundee City council and Tayside Contracts as the Roads Maintenance Partnership.
Tayside Contracts also works in partnership with Angus and Perth and Kinross councils to maintain their roads, and those areas were also shortlisted for the award for Best Performing Roads and Winter Maintenance Service in the UK.
Dundee councillor Jimmy Black, who sits on the Tayside Contracts joint board, described the award as a “stunning achievement”.
He said: “To get all three council areas into the final is absolutely fantastic.
“It demonstrates that performance in this area is much better in recent years and continuing to improve.
“More than ever we have been executing permanent repairs first time round, which saves time and fixes the roads more effectively.”
The Road Maintenance Partnership annual performance report, authored by city development director Mike Galloway, indicates that the rising number of potholes appears to have been halted in the 2014-15 financial year.
Mr Galloway said: “Pothole repairs continue to be an important focus for the partnership both in terms of the quality of the repair and the speed of the repair depending on its priority category and location.
“Records show that in comparison to the same period over the last three years, pothole repair numbers reached a peak in 2013-14 of 26,638. Current indications are that in 2014-15, this increasing trend has stopped.”
