Opposition councillors have been denied detailed figures about the city council’s budget for 2016/17, it has been claimed.
Dundee City Council will have to make £23 million of savings in the next financial year.
Councillors will be asked to approve the final budget on February 25 but West End Liberal Democrat Fraser Macpherson claims a lack of financial information means opposition members cannot put together an alternative budget.
He said: “This is the worst settlement from Scottish Government I have ever seen and the most challenging budget for the council in many years.
“The council sets its budget on Thursday February 25 but with just a month to go to that, there is no sight nor sound of the vital budget detailed information being provided to opposition councillors that enables them to put together alternatives.
“The administration has the whole council official machinery writing their budget for them but at this stage opposition councillors simply cannot start the process of constructing alternative budgets as none of the necessary accounting detail has been provided.”
Mr Macpherson said the director of corporate services, Marjory Stewart, had told him the delay was because the local authority is still attempting to “clarify” the settlement with the Scottish Government.
Finance Secretary John Swinney has imposed a 3.5% cut on council budgets.
“The lack of information any information at this late stage is truly worrying, particularly given the austerity cuts imposed by John Swinney on the city,” he added.
