Dr Hector Fowlie, a leading figure in mental health in Scotland, has died at the age of 84.
The former chairman of Dundee Association for Mental Health gained recognition for his expertise far beyond the city.
Born in Dundee, he was educated at Harris Academy and after national service in Malaya returned to the city to study medicine at Queen’s College.
In 1964 he was appointed deputy physician superintendent at Gartnavel Hospital in Glasgow and six years later he brought his family back to Dundee when he became physician superintendent at Royal Dundee Liff and Strathmartine hospitals.
In 1989 he was awarded the OBE for services to mental health. He was the first chairman of Dundee Healthcare NHS Trust and chaired the Dundee Mental Health Association.
He is survived by his wife Christina, sons Stephen and Peter, daughter Kay, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Dr Fowlie’s funeral was held at Dundee Parish Church (St Mary’s) last Friday.
