Dundee’s under-fire police call centre has made significant improvements to answering emergency 999 and routine 101 calls.
Figures released in September showed Dundee’s control room had the lowest number of 999 and 101 calls responded to within their target times out of Scotland’s five centres.
They showed 91% of 999 calls were answered within the set 10-second objective, while just 77% of 101 queries were responded to within 40 seconds.
But new figures released for November found Dundee’s call centre has improved to 93% of 999 calls answered within 10 seconds and 82% of 101 queries by 40 seconds.
Despite the rise, Dundee still lags behind the other control rooms in Aberdeen, Inverness, Bilston Glen and Glasgow.
Drew Livingstone, Unison’s police staff Scotland services and conditions officer in Dundee, said there were two ways to look at the figures.
He said: “From what I’ve been told, part of the rise in grade of service is because the calls are sometimes being routed through to Glasgow or Bilston Glen.
“That’s why we look like we’re proving resilient for calls being answered in the north.
“The problem is that some of these calls aren’t being answered by local staff now.
“There’s extra knowledge from staff when working in their local community even when someone is describing where they are, it can be easier for local staff to know exactly where that is.
“So, there’s two ways to look at it. If you measure the grade of service through the quantity of people getting calls answered quicker, then, yes, it is good.”
