A soup, a sandwich and a ceremony Dundee couple getting married in cafe where love blossomed

Elizabeth Reddy and Sean Gardiner found love in a cafe.

A romantic couple are to wed at a Dundee tea room after falling in love with the venue during their first date.

Sean Gardiner and Elizabeth Reddie are tying the knot on Thursday at the city’s Madigan’s Food Emporium after a “whirlwind” romance, which began with a date at the popular Castle Street cafe and bookshop two years ago.

The future Mr and Mrs Gardiner met during a political protest before working together at Dundee’s Soul Garden, a successful community kitchen which provides food to people throughout the city.

The couple, who both work full-time at Soul Garden, agree that though their choice of venue left family and friends slightly confused, Madigan’s was their first, second and third choice when looking for a location to host their big day.

Sean, 46, revealed: “Madigan’s was the first place both I and Elizabeth thought of when planning a venue.

“We had our first date there two years ago and really liked the relaxed, family atmosphere. The staff were so helpful too.

“We never thought that they would allow us to have it there, but as soon as we mentioned our plan to Wendy, the owner, she was very keen.

“Our family and friends were a bit confused when we told them and did ask why, but as soon as we explained the background to our decision they thought it was very romantic.

“We have 30 guests coming along on the day and have a registrar coming along to conduct the ceremony.

“After that we will have some dinner and then go on to 67 Club on Raglan Street.

“It is a bit unusual to get married in a cafe I suppose, but it’s what we both wanted.

“Who knows, maybe we’ll come back here for our 10-year or 20-year anniversary as well!”

Madigan’s owner Wendy Scullin says she is delighted the couple see her business as the perfect location.

She said: “This is a first for us.

“Sean and Elizabeth had their first date here around about the time of our first anniversary and are being married on the third anniversary of us opening.

“We’re very honoured that they thought of us and are delighted to be helping them both on their big day.”
