Tay sea defences could be bolstered after storm damage

New coastal defences could be put in place after winter storms battered Tayside’s coastline.
Beaches have been blasted by the weather, with sand dunes at Broughty Ferry and sea walls at Monifieth bearing the brunt of the storms.
Now more than half a mile of rock sea defences could be put along Broughty Ferry beach to stop further erosion, from a position near the Glass Pavilion to as far as Sandy Point.
Ferry councillor Laurie Bidwell said the defences were part of a £1 million bid for Scottish Government money.
He said: “The council had a report last year about flood risk based on analysis involving Sepa (Scottish Environment Protection Agency) and consultants for the whole of the coastal area, and it was partly about coastal protection and the effects of climate change.
“The council advised that they would get back to us with measures to put in place to protect people and coastal areas.
“The Scottish Government came up with money earlier than anticipated and we have been told that there is some potentially available that in part would be for coastal protection work from the Glass Pavilion all the way along to the Dighty.”
