Scores of new homes will be created in Dundee as two major housing developments take shape.
The first will see Hillcrest Housing Association delivering 32 affordable homes for rent on Sinclair Street in Lochee.
Meanwhile, a pension fund is behind plans to clear disused office and factory space to the east of Barns of Claverhouse Road, to the north of the city, to make way for 35 homes.
It had been hoped that work on the Lochee site would already be well under way, only for the housing association to hit problems with its chosen contractor.
With Marshall Construction now in charge of the build, bosses hope that work will start early next month, with the development completed in January.
“We are committed to providing Dundee with good quality affordable housing, and our latest development at Sinclair Street will do just that,” said Hillcrest’s David Zwirlein.
“A mixture of one- and two-bedroom properties will be delivered by January next year, marking a much-needed injection of affordable housing into the city.”
Hillcrest and their partners are currently on-site or have planning approval to develop 119 new homes across Dundee by late 2018.
The second scheme still needs the approval of Dundee City Council, but if successful will lead to the construction of 35 homes at Claverhouse, built around a traditional village green.
Neil Gray, the agent for the site, said: “The applicants are a pension fund, that due to improvements in the housing market and a high demand for housing in the area, are seeking to develop in a way that benefits the local community.
“If the plans are approved then steps would be taken to appoint a house builder who could complete the project.”
Jim Malone, chairman of the Mill o’ Mains Tenants and Residents Association, said he had concerns about the plan’s impact on facilities and schools, but nonetheless supported the development.
“The chosen area would be good for houses and I think good for the community as that site has been derelict for some time. This will help with the development of the area as a whole.”
