Dundee’s Citizen of the Year 2016 is 68-year-old primary school volunteer Roz Scott.
Roz has been volunteering at Ardler Primary School since 2009 and said she was “surprised and overwhelmed” to be this year’s recipient.
She added: “I was really delighted to be chosen but I was shocked by the news. I didn’t know anything about it.
“Flabbergasted would be the word, in fact when I heard about it I was rendered quite speechless which is really something for me.It really is an amazing honour.”
Since retiring to Broughty Ferry, the former educational psychologist has supported pupils in many different curricular areas, volunteering for two full days at school as well as spending time at home.
Roz said she was “just looking for a way to help” when she got involved with the school through Ardler Church but had been overwhelmed by the welcome she received.
She said: “I didn’t know if I would be acceptable but I just wanted to do something to help. It’s just been fabulous. The school has been so welcoming.
“I try to support the teachers and the children’s learning. The school has a focus on trying to develop each child’s potential.”
One of her great successes was the creation and implementation of the Discovery Group a programme designed to support and enhance children’s learning and confidence.
Roz’s name will now be added to the Citizen of the Year roll of honour in the City Chambers as well as on a plaque to be added to the Citizen of the Year trophy.
Lord Provost Bob Duncan said: “Roz Scott is a tremendous supporter of education, particularly in Ardler and working with Ardler Primary School and the church.
“She is an inspiring individual and one who encourages, supports and motivates pupils. We had a lot of great entries but Roz Scott stood out amongst this year’s applications.
“The recommendations for why she should win were absolutely phenomenal.Roz is an exceptional candidate and truly a worthy winner.”
Each year Dundee City Council seeks out a Citizen of the Year who has provided outstanding service to their community.
Judges look for someone who provides selfless service to a voluntary body or the community and who brings distinction and quality to everyday life in Dundee.
