Mystery surrounds a cat abandoned in a Dundee park – along with its carrier and food bowl.
The adult male bengal cat was found in Camperdown Park by a member of the public and rescued by Scottish SPCA officers on Saturday.
Nicknamed ‘Benji’ by his rescuers, the cat is in good condition and how he came to be left in the park has shocked officers.
Benji is being cared for at the charity’s rescue and rehoming centre in Petterden and an appeal for information to help track down his owner has been issued.
Assistant manager Dale Christie said: “Benji was found in a good, healthy condition, so we don’t think he was there for long. The cat carrier also looked brand new.
“Benji is such a friendly boy and we are shocked that someone would dump him like this.
“Unfortunately he doesn’t have a microchip and we aren’t sure whether he has been stolen or abandoned.”
As Benji is friendly and does not appear to have been neglected staff are keen to discover if he has an owner who is looking for him.
Anyone who may have information or know who Benji belongs to is being asked to contact the charity’s animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
Abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006. Anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.
