Campaigners hoping to save Menzieshill High have gathered nearly 2,500 signatures on a petition calling for a council rethink on the closure.
The Save Menzieshill High group claim the signatures show there is little public appetite for the council’s plans to shut the school’s doors.
The Rev Bob Mallinson, who runs the campaign, said: “The community has a voice and that voice is saying don’t close the school.
“The council have to listen to what people are saying. At the moment they are just ignoring the voice of local people.
“We want the council to look at all the options available, not just close the school without thinking.”
Concerned parents gathered at the school recently after it emerged council officials would again delay discussion of the closure until June 22 despite already being in possession of the Education Scotland report.
Maureen Forbes has two sons at Menzieshill and is one of those campaigning to stop the school being shut down.
The 51-year-old said: “We’re just trying to save the school. I have two sons here and it would be terrible if it were to shut.
“We live in Charleston and Harris Academy is just too far for them to go.
“They (the council) should have spoken to parents in the first place so we can work out what will work best, rather than just deciding to close the school.”
Another parent, 33-year-old Ashley McDonald, branded the attempt to close the school “a complete joke”.
She added: “I have a son at Menzieshill and my daughter would be going in 2016. The council just don’t care and won’t care. It is just not fair.
“They are trying to shut our school without even listening to parents.”
Education convener Stewart Hunter insisted that the SNP administration was listening to parents.
He said: “Under legislation, we have to give appropriate time for the public report to be published before it is discussed.
“We’re still hoping to do that for May, but it is looking a little tight, so it might be the meeting (of the education committee) in June.
“We will be notifying all those concerned very soon and we will take on board all that is being said from parents.”
