First Minister ‘absolutely endorses’ Dundee academic’s neutrality

The First Minister has backed the chairman of a Dundee University series of independence-related events to remain neutral despite one of his minister’s questioning the institute over his appearance at a pro-Union event.
Alex Salmond was challenged by Conservative leader Ruth Davidson to condemn any attempt to suppress views following a row centred on Dundee University historian Professor Chris Watley, who is involved in the 5 Million Questions project.
It emerged this week that he appeared at a pro-UK Better Together event, prompting Dundee City East MSP Shona Robison to question Professor Watley’s neutrality.
At First Minister’s Questions on Thursday, Ms Davidson said: “You say something that the SNP doesn’t like and you can expect an intimidating contact.”
Mr Salmond defended Ms Robison.
“The accusation is total and utter nonsense. The words ‘intimidation’ and ‘Shona Robison’ don’t sit easily together,” he said.
He added: “I absolutely endorse Professor Whatley’s objective and neutral chairing of the 5 Million Questions campaign…”
