A former Black Watch sergeant major whose life mission is to keep the name of the regiment alive has launched a campaign to have a train named in its honour.
Charlie Reid has called on Virgin to name its East Coast service, which runs through traditional recruitment areas, “Spirit of The Black Watch”.
Mr Reid believes it would be a fitting tribute, particularly with 2016 marking the centenary of the Battle of the Somme.
The Dundee and District Wrens Association president has previously successfully lobbied for a new street close to Dundee’s Waterfront project to be named after the regiment.
The 69-year-old said: “I’ve written to Virgin to ask them to consider naming one of their trains after The Black Watch.
“I’ve suggested the name Spirit of The Black Watch, but I’m not sure what they would choose.
“Virgin have written back and have said they really like the idea, but I haven’t heard back as to if they’re going to do it.
“Their East Coast service goes through some historical recruiting grounds, right through Black Watch Country.
“Last year was the centenary of the Battle of Loos and I asked for street names at the new Waterfront development to be named after The Black Watch.
“This year is 100 years since the Battle of the Somme and if we can get this done then it will just be the icing on the cake.
“Once the name is there it’s there forever.”
Mr Reid’s previous campaign resulted in Dundee City Council naming a footpath running along the River Tay “Black Watch Parade”.
Mr Reid added: “I was a Sergeant Major in The Black Watch and was in the regiment for 23 years.
“I served all over the world and loved it. It’s a band of brothers. My mission in life is to keep The Black Watch name alive.”
A spokesman for Virgin Trains said the firm was aware of Mr Reid’s efforts, but that a decision is some way off.
