Dundee man helping with challenge to build home for African orphans in two weeks

A Dundonian man is part of a 19-strong group of UK tradesmen setting off today for Kenya to help build homes for impoverished African children.
Jim Dorward, an assistant site manager with Stewart Milne Homes, will help his colleagues build a 16-bed dormitory and a three-bedroom house for the Gathimba Edwards Foundation, a charity set up by Kenyan international athlete Gideon Gathimba and Scottish 1,500m champion Myles Edwards, in just under two weeks.
The work will be carried out in the Kenyan village of Katarina at the Pavilion Village children’s home which houses 23 orphaned children.
Mr Dorward said: “The biggest challenge will be not always being able to use power tools which will make simple jobs harder and longer to carry out.
“But we’re going to do everything we can to complete two high-quality new-builds before we leave.”
He added: “None of us have been to Africa before. I still cannot believe I am going.”
