Weeks away from celebrating his 59th wedding anniversary, Bill Cameron said goodbye forever to his beloved wife.
Stricken with illness and confined to hospital, Bill’s family recorded the funeral service of the love of his life, Rena, enabling him to say a final tearful goodbye.Hours later, Dundee-born Bill passed away.Their daughter, Heather Gorman, said he simply wanted to be reunited with her.For the best part of six decades Bill, 81, and Rena, 82, from Monifieth, had been inseparable. They had been together constantly from marrying six months after their eyes first met across the canteen of a Glasgow shipyard in 1956.Heather, 45, explained: “My mum died on Thursday February 18 and her funeral was set for the following Thursday.“Dad was very keen to get to the funeral that’s all he kept saying.“But he was readmitted to hospital on Wednesday night and didn’t make it.”Heather believes the short timeframe between the deaths means that her dad had no intentions of living without Rena. She says Bill, who had been suffering from pneumonia, was holding on for just enough time to fulfil his final desire of witnessing his wife’s funeral.Forced to accept that Bill would be unable to attend the funeral, Heather decided to take matters into her own hands. She revealed: “I recorded the service for him on my phone, which was maybe a bit ghoulish, but we thought he needed to see it.“My brother and I went to hospital and watched it back with him.“It was the first time I’ve properly seen him cry.“He said it was brilliant and I think it gave him a lot of peace.”Within a matter of hours, Bill also passed away.Heather received a call in the early hours of Friday morning to inform her.His passing has convinced Heather that the couple are together once more. She said: “For me, I just don’t think that he wanted to be without her.“They were together for 59 years and were only apart for eight days. It’s a comfort to know that they are back together again.”Bill’s funeral service will take place at Parkgrove Crematorium, Friockheim, at 12.30pm.
