Double yellow lines that have caused parking misery for people living in City Quay are to be removed.
The lines were painted on South Victoria Dock Road and Gourlay Yard a few weeks ago, preventing residents of the Southern Wharf apartment complex from parking on the street.
The development has fewer than one parking space per flat claimed to be a problem dating back to the site’s original developer and a residents’ action group said that being denied the ability to leave their vehicles on the street when needed was unacceptable.
The city council had explained that the double yellow lines were part of an agreement with the company which took over the development.
Now though, recognition of the practical drawbacks appear to have been enough for the lines to be earmarked for removal.
In a letter to Bill Newcombe, chairman of City Quay Phase 4 and 5 Owners’ Association, Councillor Craig Melville has confirmed that the streets will be returned to their former status.
Mr Melville and fellow councillor Ken Lynn met the council’s head of transportation Neil Gellatly to discuss general parking issues at City Quay.
“We agreed that the double yellow lines were not necessary and acted as a hindrance to resident parking,” Mr Melville said.
“We are waiting on final confirmation but we are confident the removal of the yellow lines will be signed off.
“There are a number of issues surrounding parking at City Quay but this decision frees up spaces again, which is a move in the right direction.”
Lynne Noble, of the owners’ association, said: “I didn’t think it would happen so quickly. They have seen sense and we are all really happy with the decision.”
A date for the removal of the double yellow lines has yet to be confirmed.
