Labour will choose the candidate to replace Jim McGovern in the Dundee West general election race today, with four local figures on the shortlist.
Campaigner and former special adviser Michael Marra, prominent trades union activist George McIrvine, local councillor Richard McCready, and Alan Cowan a former researcher for Marlyn Glen when she was an MSP will be interviewed before a selection is made.
A four-person special selection panel will make the decision after the deadline for applications closed on Sunday morning.
Due to the close proximity to next month’s election candidates must have their documentation in by Thursday the choice will be made by senior figures within the central Labour Party, rather than the Dundee branch.
As revealed by The Courier, Mr McGovern, who served as MP for the west of the city for 10 years, withdrew his bid to be re-elected after receiving medical advice not to stand.
On standing down, he said: “It’s been an absolute pleasure and privilege to serve the people of Dundee West for the past 10 years.”
Political opponents, such as the SNP’s Stewart Hosie and Pete Wishart, paid tribute to him upon his retirement.
