Call for action after years of flooding on Cedar Road

Flooding on Cedar Road in Broughty Ferry is a problem which has plagued residents for a number of years.
Flooding on Cedar Road in Broughty Ferry is a problem which has plagued residents for a number of years.

A Broughty Ferry councillor has expressed his frustration with the continued flooding of a local street.

Labour member Laurie Bidwell said the flooding at Cedar Road was “very unpleasant” and needed to be resolved. The road, which sits in a dip, is often left flooded after heavy rain, with the drainage unable to handle the excess water.

The water often comes out of the sewage drains, leaving a potentially hazardous mess.

Mr Bidwell said: “This has been going on for a number of years. We really need to do something about it. Water is coming out of the sewage drains, bringing sewage up on to the road and pavement.

“When the weather is really bad it flows up over the pavement and even into the drive and garden of one resident, which is very unpleasant. Another house, which is rented out, has damp coming through as a result.”

Scottish Water does clean up the mess when notified, he added, but has so far failed to find a proper solution to the ongoing problem.

“The measures that have been taken over the years include doing work on the main sewage pipe at the top of the hill, things like that, but the problem has continued. It is an issue I’ve raised at council meetings.

“We can’t be the only area that gets this sort of flash flooding and we clearly need investment in the capacity of the sewage pipes to deal with heavy downpours.”
