A fundraising effort has been launched to bring a tragic Dundee teenager’s body back from Magaluf.
Friends of the family of Nadine Duffy, who was 19, have organised a fundraising night at Fat Sam’s in Dundee on Friday night.
Nadine died on the Spanish island where she had spent the summer working in a bar.
Fat Sam’s DJ Craig Douris is a close friend of the family and heard it was costing the family around £10,000 to fly the body back. Management at the club have agreed to help.
A spokesman for the club said: “This Friday at Fat Sam’s, we are raising money to help the Duffy family bring home Nadine’s body, after her untimely death in Magaluf. It is costing the family around 10K to bring her home and we want to help. We will therefore donate £1 of the door price for everyone who comes to the club on Friday night, towards the worthwhile cause. Our thoughts are with Nadine’s family at this sad time.”
Two guitars signed by bands who have played at the venue are also being donated for an auction.
There have been hundreds of tributes to Nadine, who was a keen footballer.
Her mum Karen has led the tributes, describing her as a ‘beautiful and stunning’ daughter.
She said: “She was beautiful and so stunning and so funny. We haven’t got our heads around it. She loved going out and was just full of life.
“She was such a tomboy as well. She had played football since she was 10 and even had some trials for Scotland.
“I remember when she was in P1, she refused to wear the school skirts so we had to put her in trousers.
“Despite all of that she was still so beautiful.”
Her best friend Courtney Halliday, who spent the start of the summer with her on the Spanish island, also spoke of the “happy girl”.
“We got the news just yesterday,” she said. “It was a total shock, it was just unbelievable. She was such a happy girl. I was her closest friend. We had been friends for ages, since school.”
Nadine went to Morgan Academy and had two sisters Shelley, 23, and Leona, 11.
Courtney added: “She had been working as a rep at a bar in Magaluf. She was loving it. She worked there for the whole summer. She was meant to be coming home in four weeks. She will be greatly missed.”
Nadine had played for Celtic Girls Tayside for three-and-a-half years.
Coach Duncan Menzies said: “She was a terrific girl and it was great to have her in the squad. She always had a laugh and was there to help anyone else out.
“She was one of the best girls I have ever seen play football. It is really sad what has happened, it’s unbelievable. Everyone is just really shattered by this.”
The Celtic Girls Tayside FC also tweeted: “Our thoughts are with family and friends of our former player Nadine Duffy. Will never be forgotten x RIP.”
