The proposed multi-million-pound overhaul of the Wellgate Centre to include a multi-screen cinema has been recommended for approval.
Dundee development management committee will consider a report from director of city development Mike Galloway next week saying the plans are “positive changes”.
Up to 330 jobs could be created in the huge development, which would include a 900-seat eight-screen cinema, family restaurants, cafes and leisure outlets (see more photos here).
The project has been welcomed as a boost to the east end of the city centre and to the night-time economy.
Wellgate’s main entrance at the end of Murraygate will be remodelled and the rear entrance off Victoria Road will be altered for the cinema. Part of Central Library will be reconfigured to allow the changes but it would remain open to the public.
There are no objections to the project and Mr Galloway concluded there are no material considerations to justify refusal. He recommended approval subject to conditions on the finishing materials, the provision of electric vehicle charging points and noise controls.
Mr Galloway previously said Dundee’s £1 billion waterfront development was a “big persuader” for property investment management company Orchard Street’s regeneration project.
* The proposed conversion of the former box office at 6-7 City Square into a restaurant has also been recommended for approval.
Applicant Jonathan Horne already operates Henry’s Coffee House at 4 City Square, and the two ventures have been hailed as an investment to bring more atmosphere to the area.
