An elderly man was treated for smoke inhalation after a fire in a neighbour’s flat in Seymour Street.
Three appliances from nearby Blackness Road fire station attended just after 7pm on Thursday night, plus an ambulance and paramedic vehicle, after an unattended candle set fire to a tumble dryer.
No one was injured in the blaze, which caused extensive damage to the appliance and smoke damage to the first-floor flat.
Crew manager Scott Bricknell said firefighters wearing four sets of breathing apparatus used a hosereel to extinguish the fire.
He said the elderly occupant and three other tenents in the block evacuated the close prior to their arrival.
“However one resident attempted to fight the fire and he was treated for smoke inhalation as a precaution,” he said.
“The cause was due to an unattended candle igniting the surrounding fabric of a tumble dryer. All persons were accounted for.
“I would urge careful use of candles in appropriate holders that don’t allow the transfer of heat to products they are placed upon.
“People should also have a working smoke alarmm, or call the fire service.”
