Katherine Garrett-Cox, chief executive and chief investment officer of Alliance Trust in Dundee, has been awarded the CBE in the New Year Honours.

The honour is for her services to the asset management industry and her charitable work as trustee of the Baring Foundation.

She has spent more than 22 years in the investment industry.

Alliance Trust, with headquarters in Marketgait, manages assets of £4.7billion.

Before Alliance Trust, she worked as the chief investment officer and executive director at Morley Fund Management and chief investment officer and executive director at Aberdeen Asset Management.

In December 2011, she was appointed to the Prime Minister’s business advisory group.

She was listed in the Financial Times’ ranking of the Top 50 Women in World Business in 2010 and in 2011 was included in the list of 100 Most Influential Women in European Business.

A BA (Hons) graduate in history from Durham University, she is a member of the UK Society of Investment Professionals, CFA Institute and was nominated a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum in 2005.

She is also a member of the supervisory board of Deutsche Bank AG.

The Baring Foundation, of which she is a trustee, gives money to charities and voluntary organisations pursuing charitable purposes and this year had a budget of £1.9 million-plus more from funding partnerships.

Married with four children, Mrs Garrett-Cox, 46, who chaired this year’s Courier business awards judging panel, lives in Angus.

She relaxes by reading, skiing and sailing and plays the piano and flute.
