A 16-year-old girl who attacked a police officer inside a court building repeatedly butting and punching her in the face has been detained for a year.
The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, launched the horrific assault on PC Gwen Louden in the foyer of Dundee Sheriff Court in January.
She had been sitting in the building’s court room number one listening to a case but was thrown out for “comments” she made during it.
The girl, who the court heard has a £180 a fortnight cannabis habit, was asked to leave by PC Louden.
But she re-entered and was then arrested prompting the attack.
Depute fiscal Stewart Duncan told Dundee Sheriff Court how the girl, who is 6ft tall, punched and butted PC Louden before raining down blow after blow on her head.
The officer was off work for almost a month as a result of the attack but has since returned to duty.
The 16-year-old, of Dundee, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault to injury committed on January 28.
She also admitted breaching a community payback order.
Sheriff Tom Hughes sentenced the girl to eight months’ detention for the assault and a further four months, to be served consecutively, for the breach of the community payback order.
He said: “This is an appalling offence to a police officer while she was on duty. A custodial sentence is inevitable.”
