A former Dundee newsagent’s shop is to be turned into a takeaway after permission for a change of use was granted by the local authority.
The vacant Stobswell Newsagent’s on Dura Street will become a Thai food takeaway if all goes smoothly.
Planning permission was granted despite the existence of a number of takeaway shops on the same street.
A report accompanying the decision stated: “This particular site is located between a public house and two other hot food takeaways and it has a restaurant above.
“It is noted that the site has been vacant and actively marketed for a period of 18 months.
“It is accepted that there are a number of similar land uses in the area. However, it is not the purpose of the planning system to control competition between different commercial operators, and while the proposal would add another takeaway into the area, it would not alter the character or amenity of the area to an unacceptable level.”
Three letters of objection were received with regards to the planning application citing the number of hot food takeaways in the area, a lack of parking, shadowing, litter, odours and the proposed ventilation details.
The report added: “The head of environmental protection considers the proposed ventilation and extraction systems to be acceptable and has no objection to the application.”
