Beer delivery workers strike

Beer delivery workers strike

Dundee beer delivery workers supported a 24-hour strike in a row over jobs.

The Unite union said Wednesday’s walkout by its members at Kuehne + Nagel Drinks Logistics (KNDL) would cause “significant disruption” to thousands of sites.

Pubs, clubs, airports, theatres, mainline railway stations, football grounds and Parliament were all hit.

The union said a restructuring exercise will lead to job losses.

The Dundee depot at Ainslie Street in West Pitkerro will not close but Unite members fear there will be job losses.

KNDL want to create main hubs at Livingston, Newbury and Wakefield from which beer, cider, lager and soft drinks will be distributed to 29 depots including Dundee.

The volume of drinks consumed in licensed premises has steadily declined, and the company wants a more flexible distribution model.

They offered further consultation but said the union was not prepared to accept the proposals or the offer to bring in the arbitration service ACAS.

Unite national officer Rhys McCarthy said: “KNDL’s refusal to take our concerns seriously mean there will be significant disruption to the supply of beer.

“Unite cannot rule out further action if the company continues to drive through change without properly negotiating or assessing the impact of the changes.”
