Dundee City Council’s housing convener has admitted talks on the city’s problem with illegal Traveller camps have been delayed.
A series of major encampments was set up in Dundee last year, including groups of dozens of caravans at public sites including Camperdown Park and Caird Park.
In addition, residents in Fintry were critical of the city council when it struck a deal with one group of Travellers to park on land on Jack Martin Way, close to the Dundee housing scheme, without the immediate threat of being moved on by court action.
The camps have sparked calls for the city to look again at how it deals with Traveller groups, with the council’s official site at Balmuir Wood, near Tealing, currently underused by caravans.
Councillors convened late in the year to discuss the way forward, with further meetings due to take place before the end of last year.
However, Councillor John Alexander said: “Further talks had to be rescheduled due to a range of factors and have not taken place yet.
“I’m looking at trialling a different approach but this requires a degree of consensus and I am working with colleagues to implement a different way forward.
“There has been no policy change at this point. Any formal change will require committee approval and the backing of a majority of councillors.”
